Kealeigh Barker (K) is an Associate Lawyer at D’Angelo Legal and we asked her some questions about her life as a lawyer.
Q: How long have you been working at D’Angelo Legal?
K: About five and a half years now. When I started, the Firm consisted of Paul D’Angelo, our Legal Practitioner Director and one Law Clerk. I have been fortunate enough to see the firm grow to its current size of seven people. I started working with D’Angelo Legal as a Law Clerk while studying at University and then completed my Article Clerkship in April of 2010 which was when Paul moved my admission into the Supreme Court.
Q: Where did you study law?
K: I studied Law at Edith Cowan University (ECU) and I was fortunate to be in their first ever graduating class of Law students. As my maiden name was ‘Barker’ I was the first alphabetically and was literally the first ever person to accept a law degree from ECU – it was very exciting to be in that inaugural class of graduates!
Q: What other jobs have you held?
K: Ever since I was 14 years and 9 months old, (the legal age to get a job in Western Australia), I have been working. I worked casually at Coles for over seven years (covering almost every department and three stores in that time) and in catering and a pub in Joondalup for five years. I loved the social aspect of bar and catering work. I also met my husband at the bar where I worked! D’Angelo Legal was my first legal job.
Q: What area of law do you specialise in?
K: Although I work in and manage the Property Division of D’Angelo Legal (including Conveyancing and Leasing) I also have the conduct of Probate files, Wills and Estate Planning files, as well as General Commercial files (including drafting contracts, trusts, business agreements and assisting clients with contract disputes).
Q: What do you like about working at D’Angelo Legal?
K: I like the people that I work with and the fact that I have a supportive boss who allows me to have some flexibility in my work day so I can start a little early and finish a little early, allowing me to spend more time with my beautiful little 14 month old son, Kobe. Being a working mum, it is important to try and get that work/life balance right and I feel I am doing pretty well with that for now.
I’m on a great career path and was recently promoted to an Associate Lawyer, which I’m really happy about.
Q: Did you always want to become a lawyer?
K: Yes, in fact I did. As a child growing up, I would often say to my mother, “When I grow up I’m going to be a lawyer and live in a mansion.” Mum even has a school assignment of mine where I said that when I was 8! Well, at least the first part of that has come true – I might need a lotto win for the mansion!
Q: What do you like about being a lawyer?
K: I like that I can help people understand the law by explaining things in plain English, which some lawyers can struggle with. I also like being in a position of trust and I like the personal interaction. I love to talk to people (which my friends and family know all too well). It is also rewarding to earn a good living to help support my family.
Congratulations Kealeigh on your recent promotion to Associate Lawyer! Keep up the great work.
